Meet John Walters

Founder of The Rouse Home—Helping You Choose Better Floors, One Step at a Time

Hi, I’m John Walters—and for the past 10 years, flooring has been more than just my profession. It’s been my passion, my craft, and—honestly—my obsession.

I’m also the founder of The Rouse Home, a blog built to take the stress out of flooring decisions. Whether you’re installing a new floor for the first time or just trying to figure out why that one plank keeps clicking, I’m here to help you do it right—without the overwhelm.

From the first time I helped a client tear out worn carpet in their starter home, I knew there was something deeply satisfying about transforming a space from the ground up—literally. Since then, I’ve worked in homes across the U.S.—urban lofts in Chicago, ranch-style houses in Texas, beach homes in Florida, and plenty of middle-of-the-map makeovers too.

I launched this site because I saw a recurring issue: too many homeowners were overwhelmed by options, misled by buzzwords, or left frustrated by avoidable mistakes. I wanted to change that.

The Rouse Home is your no-fluff, no-fuss flooring guide—built on real job-site experience, hands-on installs, and practical know-how you can actually use.

What You’ll Find Here

Whether you’re choosing between vinyl and laminate, planning your first DIY installation, or trying to fix a squeaky plank, this blog is here to walk you through it—all in plain English.

I write every guide with one goal in mind:
To make flooring simple, practical, and stress-free—without cutting corners.

Expect:

  • Straightforward comparisons that explain what actually matters
  • DIY installation walkthroughs that give you confidence, not confusion
  • Product advice from someone who’s tested them in real homes
  • Cleaning and care tips to protect your floors for the long haul
  • Design insights that balance looks and livability

If a method didn’t work on the job, I’ll tell you. If a product cracked under pressure (literally), I’ll warn you. Real advice for real homes—that’s the promise.

Why Trust Me?

I’ve spent over a decade in the field—working directly with homeowners, general contractors, and interior designers—choosing, installing, repairing, and reviewing flooring of all kinds. Hardwood, vinyl, laminate, tile—you name it, I’ve laid it (and probably fixed it too).

Every guide on this blog is based on hands-on work. No AI-generated fluff, no sales pitch. Just one flooring guy who knows what works in the real world—and wants to help you get it right the first time.

A Bit More About Me

  • Based in the USA
  • ️ Flooring installer-turned-consultant
  • Pet-friendly flooring advocate (my Labrador, Max, has tested more wear layers than most labs ever should)
  • Practical to the core—if it doesn’t hold up in a lived-in home, I won’t recommend it
  • ☕ Black coffee over fancy tools every time

Let’s Get to Work

Floors are more than just surfaces—they’re where life happens. They anchor your home’s style, support your daily routine, and take on everything from muddy boots to toddler spills.

If you’re here, you’re already thinking carefully about what’s under your feet—and I’m here to make sure you feel confident in every decision.

Welcome to The Rouse Home. Let’s build something solid together.
